Spot Shrimp/Prawn trap rigging by John Martinis: Rigging a shrimp pot is fairly straight forward. First let’s start with the weight of the shrimp pot. The shrimp pot that I use SMI 19027 weighs approximately 13lbs right out of the box. To get the best performance out of a shrimp pot, the pot should weigh 30lbs or more. Why? When a shrimp pot is lowered to the bottom in 300 feet of water there are two major factors involved in keeping the pot in one place. The wind/waves are tugging on the rope and the buoys. This can cause the shrimp pot to either move or hop up and down from the bottom. If your shrimp pot is moving around the result is either no shrimp or very few shrimp.

When the tide is moving, the tide is causing drag on the 400ft of rope that is tethered to the pot. The drag on the rope can and will move the shrimp pot if there is insufficient weight added to the shrimp pot. Two of my SMI 19027 shrimp pots have an extra 15lbs of weight added (close enough). I chose to use three SMI 19112 5lb weights. These weights are plastic coated and have a hole one each end of the weight, attach the weights under the tunnel entrances of the shrimp pot. My other two shrimp pots have a 15lb brick of lead in the center bait box of the shrimp pot. To avoid attaching the weights twice like I had to, invest in the heavy duty tie straps. The standard tie straps break or come loose from using the shrimp pot. The shrimp pot harness on my pots are the SMI 19119. This is a good quality heavy duty harness. From the harness to the buoys rig the pot with 400ft of 5/16” leaded rope. When it comes to the yellow buoys to float 400ft of leaded rope there are two different directions to go: If you are just shrimping in Puget Sound you can get by with two jumbo yellow buoys. If you plan on shrimping in the Straights of Juan de Fuca or in the San Juan Islands you need to use two standard yellow buoys and one inflatable yellow buoy. Shrimping stories are filled with, “I lost my shrimp pot” stories. Almost always a shrimp pot loss is from not enough weight and not enough flotation. I have my shrimp pot buoys on a separate detachable line for easy storage. A final rigging tip that will not result in limits of shrimp but will keep the access doors from going overboard: Tie strap the top access doors of the shrimp pot so that they don’t get lost. The door latches loosen over time and they can get lost by going overboard. The dome style stackable shrimp pots are usually heavy enough for Puget Sound shrimping but you might want to add weight for shrimping in the Straights of Juan de Fuca and the San Juan islands. Your shrimping adventures are going to yield limits of spot shrimp/prawns if you take your time and rig your shrimp pots correctly.
